Series Premise: Kamisama Dolls is a weekly televised anime series started in July 2011, based on an action series by Hajime Yamamura. Billed as “Girl Meets God”, Kyouhei has moved away from his small village to start a new life away from the obligations and traumatic events of his past, shunning a life where he was the one of the masters of a powerful “god” in the form of a summoned “Doll”. But when his younger sister shows up at his doorstep following a grisly murder, he soon finds he cannot run from his past.

Episode Summary: Aki is kidnapped by Kuuko, but he quickly turns the tables on her. Luckily, Kyouhei, Boobino and Utao show up just in time, and Kyouhei lays his fists into him. Aki escapes again, they run off to try and find him, but he turns around to hide away with Kuuko. While searching for Aki, Utao runs across her “twin” brother, who taunts Utao. Oh yeah, there was also some naked Boobino and Utao bath scene fanservice for no plot-apparent reason.
My Impressions: Just quick impressions. This show is decent when it takes itself seriously, when the hokey humor stuff is pushed to the side and the tension is ratcheted up a few notches as Kyouhei loses his shit and wales away on Aki. Not that there is anything inherently wrong with humor by itself, but it’s somewhat jarring to go from Utao getting all scandalized-embarrassed about being seen naked by her brother, then moments later cutting to Aki doing his evil bad guy schtick.
And more on that evil bad guy stuff — at this point in the game I wonder just how much of a “bad guy” Aki really is. He’s certainly being played as the antagonist, and he’s definitely not one of the good guys (remember, he killed the guys transporting him in the truck earlier, not to mention the murder that opened the whole series), but it seems with Kyouhei flipping out he has his own secrets he’s hiding, his past is not so clean as you would like to believe. And now we have a rival family showing up as Utao’s double arrives on the scene. This is more than just a simple Kyouhei vs. Aki duel where Kyouhei has to deal with his demons, it appears there’s a more complicated storyline emerging.

Sampling of Online Reviews:
- “The main flaw to previous episodes of Kamisama dolls is how it was fluctuating a lot between serious plot heavy moments, and silly slice of life moments. While the slice of life moments were fun, at the same time they would kill the momentum of the plot by taking up a tad bit too much screentime. This episode manages to avoid this pacing issue for the most part, with much more condensed and brief slice of life segments, which maintains the comic relief moments, all while adding a good sense of progress to the main plot.” – Emory Anime Club
- “Right now we’ve been told an awful lot, yet we’re really left mostly with unknowns – and that’s the mark of a really intricate plot. I like the way this thing is coming together, and while nothing is spectacular thus far, other than the hiccup in the first half last week it’s all been really good.” – Lost in America
- “The show is only at its fourth episode, why is there so much going and everything is so awesome ! I don’t understand ! Usually some kind of story begins to form at this point, but the first half of the episode is an intense battle and the second half is even more awesomeness. There must be something bad in this show somewhere! Currently it is so close to perfection.” – Angry Anime Bitches
- “I’m liking this idea of the village keeping secrets and everything, but there’s so much mystery that I still feel like I’m in the dark. But the series is just starting, so I can’t expect to know everything. Still, the mystery is doing a pretty good job at keeping me interested. Can’t wait for the next one.” – Marth’s Anime Blog
