Series Premise: Ashiaraiyashiki no Juunin-tachi is a “battle fantasy” story based on a long-running manga series. Along with the tenth volume of the manga, a special six-minute original video animation special was released in late March, 2010. Many years after a great conflict where a third of humanity was wiped out by invading monsters and demons, a young man named Tamura Fukutaro lives in an apartment building with various non-human creatures, causing all sorts of problems.

Spoiler-free set-up: Tamura sits down to have a quiet “hot pot” meal with some of the other residents of the Ashiaraiyashiki apartments, including what appears to be a cat-girl and a rabbit-girl. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city a battle rages on between a nameless warrior and a great creature, leading to a new offering for the hot pot.
My Impressions: Just a brief review, because it’s a brief animated special — just six minutes total. From the brief description about some “Great Summon” battle between humans and mythical creatures, based on a long-running manga series with several volumes, plus the one piece of promo art I saw, I thought this could kinda interesting. Even though this came out in Japan the March before last, it was not subtitled until very recently.
And what do we actually get for our troubles? A guy and a few girls sitting around a bubbling hot pot in the middle of some room, trading barbs back and forth. …..aaaaaand, that’s about it. Not exactly what I would call captivating stuff. (Well, I suppose if you were a hardcore fanboy for the manga series itself, you might get a little thrill to see them in animated form). I didn’t know anything about the setting (other than the two sentences about it I read online), I didn’t know anything about the characters, and in the end I couldn’t care less.
Not only that, but the artwork was quite substandard as well. All in all, it was just one tiny little disappointment, not worth the effort to watch. This was strictly a small bonus for the existing fans of the manga, period.
