Series Premise: Gag Manga Biyori (or Gyagu Manga Biyori) is a long-running comedy manga that appeared in Monthly Shonen Jump, and then Jump Square. The series has been adapted into a televised animated short series, with the first season in 2005, second season in 2006, third season in 2008, and the fourth season (titled Gag Manga Biyori +) starting in January 2010. The series involves fast-paced, frenetic humor with unusual characters in impossible situations and no continuous plot.

ep. tl;dr review: French impressionists in a juvenile Paint War; Don’t bother, it’s painfully unfunny.
Spoiler-free set-up: French impressionist painter Renoir is sitting on a bench when he blurts out he wants to paint a naked woman. Cezanne overhears him and threatens to scandalize him, and they end up challenging each other to a “Paint War”. The two of them sit down to paint a tranquil scene with other artists being the judge, slapstick hilarity ensues.
My Impressions: First, about the art. I know it’s supposed to substandard and crappy, like half a step above a child’s scribblings, and that the bad art is part of the whole ridiculousness of the situation. Yeah, I grok that. Just be prepared from some really sorry-ass drawings.
But the whole point of this series is “the gag”. It’s stupid, it’s silly, it’s over-the-top and delivered like someone hopped up on crack and meth simultaneously. It’s not supposed to make sense, and trust me, this certainly does not. It’s about as subtle as beating yourself over the head repeatedly with a claw hammer. Yeah, I grok that, too.
But where Gag Manga Biyori falls down is that it is not actually funny. For a show that relies entirely on the crazy-ass jokes, I didn’t crack a smile. Unless you count a headache the same as a smile. Or unless by “gag” they had some other meaning of that word in mind. In any case, don’t bother with this, it will just irritate you.

Sampling of Online Reviews:
- “If you’re into moe humour then you don’t want to watch this series. However, if you’re looking for hyperactivity, then you really can’t get anything more hyperactive than this. This show elevates energetic to completely new levels, the pacing is absolutely through the roof. It never waits for its audience to catch a bit of breath, it just keeps bombarding it with joke after joke after joke, all of them over the top. Grade: 85/100.” – Star Crossed Anime Blog
- “LOLWTF? I might watch this if I get really bored or something. Random comedy shows are really only good if you’re in the mood. Random is good to waste time, but I don’t want to waste time. Potential: 30%” – Riyoga’s Ramblings
