Series Premise: Naruto to Mashin to Mitsu no Onegai Dattebayo, or “Naruto, the Genie, and the Three Wishes”, is a fifteen minute special that aired as an extra for the Naruto Shippuden: The Lost Tower Movie in July, 2010. Naruto and all his friends are holding a barbeque party on the beach, when he finds a wish-granting genie in a lamp. Soon it is an all-out battle for control of the lamp between the different ninjas as they fight over the final wish.

ep. tl;dr review: Naruto comedy short confirms every character in the show is a complete idiot.

Episode Summary: Naruto, along with all his friends and peers, is on the beach for a leisurely day of eating barbeque, when he uncovers a bottle in the sand. Uncorking the bottle reveals a flamboyant genie who offers to grant three wishes. Not willing to believe him, Naruto dismissively asks for extra meat, which the genie easily grants. Then Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura excitedly discuss their next wish, but end up wasting it by mistake. With one final wish remaining, they take their time thinking about it, and the genie returns to the bottle. They soon battle amongst themselves over who will get the final wish, and eventually everyone on the beach is running around fighting over the bottle. After a long, protracted chase, they are gathered around to make their final wish…when Kakashi off-handedly arrives and asks if anyone has spare change. Cue the wah-wah trombone.

My Impressions: Given that the “Lost Tower” movie was comparatively serious, it looks like they decided to shove nearly all of the comedy relief into this one short extra that appeared in theaters as an appetizer to the movie. And there is one thing that this clearly confirmed for me: EVERY CHARACTER IN THE SHOW IS A DAMN IDIOT. Not that there was any doubt to begin with.

Frankly, this is just a “gimme” to the fans, who will probably enjoy seeing the antics of all their favorite characters, running all over behaving like morons. For the non-fan like myself, it got very tiring very fast, because I don’t care about any of them and find half of them unnervingly annoying. If you’re already a Narutard, go ahead and watch this, it’s no better or worse than an average episode. Otherise…there’s nothing worthwhile here.

Also, it didn’t help that the version that I watched had some of the worst subtitles I have ever seen (from some outfit known as SJSUBS), clearly not a single native English speaker in the bunch and sometimes it was literally garbled random characters…and out of synch by about a second, too. Half the time it was more interesting deciphering the meaning of the messed-up subtitles than paying attention to the jokes themselves.

The verdict:

Sampling of Online Reviews:

  • “I watched this special with horrible subs, but that’s what made it awesome and hilarious. When Sasuke calls Naruto a loser, he says ‘bunny swim’ for some reason. It cracked me up. The story isn’t that great, but it’s still fun to watch and the end is really surprising. The reason I enjoyed it so much was probably the subs, otherwise it would have been a regular special. Grade: 9/10.” – My Anime List top review
