Level E Episode 5

What this is about: Watching all of the anime shows so you don’t have to! For more information about me and my reviews, click here.

Series Premise: Level E is a twelve-episode weekly television series that aired between January and April 2011, based on a 1995 manga series by Yoshihiro Togashi (creator of YuYu Hakusho). Unknown to Earthlings, there have been a steady stream of visitors from other planets moving among us in secret. When on such alien crash-lands and loses his memories, he decides to move in with high-schooler Tsutsui, bringing to and end any hope of a normal life.

ep. tl;dr review: Power Ranger parody as kids fall into another Prince Baka scheme; Do not like, do not want.

Episode Summary: Prince Baka kidnaps five grade school students and forces them to join in a “Color Rangers” team (as in a sentai team). At school the next day, one of them accidentally transforms into “Red Ranger”, and discovers one of his teachers is a green-skinned lizard alien. The five students confront the teacher, who ultimately learns that Baka put them up to this, and she is very familiar with Baka’s pranks and antics. The students must “increase their levels” so that they can get the key that will free them from the Color Rangers team.

My Impressions: Aw, crap. What happened to Yukitaka and Miho? They’re the most interesting characters of the first three episodes, and completely AWOL here. Instead, as foreshadowed in the previous episode, we have Trickster Baka grabbing a bunch of kids and forming a Sentai Team…of all things. Arg. I hate sentai teams, even when done purely for comedic intent. Even worse: the next episode looks like it will be more of the same.

Well, at least this episode was not as craptacular as the previous throw-away episode, that was just plain substandard in every way. In this one, we at least have the same type of humor and charm that was on display in the original three-part introductory arc, even if the topic they are covering (sentai) is not to my liking. And we have a new interesting character (the pink-haired, green-skinned alien) that may prove an interesting foil to Prince Baka, someone who will not let the practical joker run amok. In any case, my gung-ho attitude for Level E has been seriously dampened by these past two non-Yukitaka/Miho episodes, and I’ll have to suffer through another episode of sentai silliness hoping to get back on track with more interesting stuff in the second half of the series.

Sampling of Online Reviews:

  • “Level E is a hard anime to figure out. Overall you can just put it in the comedy category, but since there is no clear story structure there is no way to predict what is going to happen next.” – Anivision
  • “Seriously, this episode was just nothing but a grown man grabbing a bunch of random kids and playing a ridiculously unfair game with them. And it was hilarious. Grade: Excellent.” – Star Crossed Anime Blog
  • “From what I can tell, there is no continuous story at all whatsoever; instead we’re just watching Prince Baka go about his usual silly pranks on different people. While I do wish for some overall plot or continuity, good gags never hurt. Grade: 3.8/5.” – Emory Anime Club
  • “Level E hits up a good bit of humor here as it works through its sentai material, even if I generally really dislike sentai teams overall. Having the kids get the costumes from the Prince and the way he deals with them is a lot of fun but there’s also a lot of laughs to be had with how the kids cope with the situation. Grade: B.” –
