Anime Review:
Digimon Xros Wars Episode 31 (Season 2 Episode 1)

What this is about: Watching all of the anime shows so you don’t have to! — I’m taking a look at the first episode of every show from the Spring 2011 anime season that has been subtitled, and giving it a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. For more information about me and my reviews, click here.

Series Premise: Digimon Xros Wars is the sixth iteration of the Digimon franchise anime series, debuting in July 2010. A second season, subtitled “The Evil Death Generals and the Seven Kingdoms”, began in April, 2011. Seventh-grader Taiki Kudou has been drawn into the Digital World, populated by creatures known as Digimon who are battling the evil Bagra Army for supremacy. Taiki now returns back to the Digital World, where he finds the world now under the thumb of Emporer Bagramon.

ep. tl;dr review: Taiki returns to Digital World and finds all is not well; Anyone else think that everything ending with “-Mon” is really annoying?

Episode Summary: Taiki and Shoutmon fly through a magical rainbow tube to arrive in an idyllic field of colorful flowers…for all of five seconds before learn from Lilymon that the Digital World is now completely controlled by the evil Emporer Bagramon and the seven DeathKnightmon generals. They meet the diminutive Dracomon, on he run from Devidramon. A guy named Kiriha arrives and challenges General Dobrickmon, who smacks him down easily, using Flarerizamon to defeat DeckerGreymon. Lilymon, Dracomon, Shoutmon and Taikimon escapemon into an underground tunnelmon, but Dobrickmon unleashes the Fanglongmon to flush them out with lavamon. Through Dragomon’s forcemon of willmon, Shoutmon Digivolves into OmegaShoutmon andmon defeatmons Dobrickmon, savingmon Taikimon andmon themon restmon. Themon endmon.

My Reaction: Almost exactly one year ago, I reviewed the first episode of the first season, dismissing decisively as a silly kiddie show aimed at a six-year-old intellect. Now with a “second season” (this is also billed as “episode 31”)…has it “evolved” into anything better or different?

Well…no. It’s still a fairly simplistic kid’s show of good guys vs. bad guys, with a whole slew of weird characters with -mon attached to the end of their names. And I don’t really want to go into any sort of in-depth review or analysis, because that’s not really necessary, and one year later my opinions about Digimon: Xros Wars remains the same.

Is it really fair for me to try and judge a show by jumping into the second part of the *sixth* season that has a well-established background? Is it really fair for me to try and judge a show aimed at people a mere fraction of my age? Doesn’t really matter, because I am most concerned with what is ‘good’ and ‘interesting’ to me, so with that frame in mind, I bid this series adieu. This one is for the hardcore existing fanbase only.

    • “Yeah, this is better. The new opening looks fantastic, entailing the adventures of Taiki, Kiriha, and Nene with several new characters and digivolutions on the side—AND for those of you who like unnecessary fanservice, there’s also a very sexy Minervamon. ” – Meeping Anime Blog
    • “Xross Wars is an enjoyable anime, so watch it. Even if you’re no digimon fan, this one’s pretty good. (If you love series like Death Note, this might not be your kind of anime though) Grade: 8/10.” – My Anime List
