Anime Review Final Thoughts:
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

What this is about: Wrapping up the very last of the 2010 anime shows that I have watched. Rather than in-depth reviews with lots of pictures, here’s just a few quick thoughts to finish up everything before I move on to 2011. Just get it all out of the way, already!

ep.13 tl;dr review: Brief’s penis opens the Gates of Hell leaving Panty and Stocking to save the day; Last 30 seconds biggest WTF moment of the year.

My Thoughts: For brief moments this series showed the potential to be the best series of the season; instead it squandered that away and must only settle for being the most interesting series of the season. At times this show was fucking brilliant (with emphasis on the fucking), shredding the boundaries of good taste with panache and infusing a fresh, creative animation style into a cynical, tired industry. But there were just too many substandard moments (and even a couple of substandard episodes) that were a chore to watch. Just pick out the first, second, sixth, twelfth and thirteenth episodes, and selected portions of some of the other duds and you have some raunchy comedy gold.

And I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t checked out the series yet, but the final scene is jaw-dropping and unexpected. Gainax, Y U gotta B trolling?

FINAL SERIES GRADE: B+ – Worth the watching, if anything for the visual orgasm of action and color. And there were some truly epic moments. At the beginning I thought the series could have been ground-breaking, and FLCL-like moment that leaves its mark on the industry. But nah, never reached that potential. A shame.

What’s Up Next: Final thoughts and final grades on Psychic Detective Yakumo, Katanagatari, Sora no Woto, Durarara, Darker than Black: Gaiden, and Time of Eve.
