Anime Summary Review: Psychic Detective Yakumo Episodes 10, 11, and 12

Rather than the longer reviews with all sorts of pictures and such, this is just a quick summary review. For a series that I’ve already been watching for several episodes, there’s not much of a reason to go into much detail. At this point in the series, you’re either still watching it (so you already know what’s going on and a long detailed run-down of everything is not really needed), or don’t care. So, without further ado:

Psychic Detective Yakumo Episode 10 – While at the hospital Isshin learns that he only have months to live, and starts to get things in order for his imminent passing. Nanase is captured by the police. More of Yakumo’s past is explored when a package arrives with pictures from his childhood.
My thoughts: After the climactic finish of the last episode, it seems that the show is trying to put things in motion for the final push, with the last major story arc at the end of the show. Quite a surprise with Isshin, who I had assumed was just a side character, but may have a greater role to play in the show than first appears. Also, I knew the animation for this show was substandard compared to most everything else, or perhaps it really was this bad all along and I never realized how distractingly poor it was while I spent my time concentrating on the story instead.

Psychic Detective Yakumo Episode 11 – Isshin accepts his imminent death head-on; rather than slowly deteriorate he allows Yakumo’s father (or rather, his spirit) to attack him. Isshin is rushed to the hospital unconscious and near death; Detective Gotou takes Nao home with him, and Nanase is possessed.
My thoughts: Lots of questions raised here – why would Isshin so willingly invite death? It seems so incredibly sudden, but then again considering there’s just two episodes left it sort of has to be sudden to wrap things up. Not sure where this is all going, really, as the story swirls around the people surrounding Yakumo rather than Yakumo himself.

Psychic Detective Yakumo Episode 12 – Detective Yakumo is on the case once again, solving the mystery of his uncle’s murder attempt. Surprise surprise, it was actually the *doctor* who shanked him, since he was a donor match for his little dying daughter. Bad Guy Doctor runs up to the roof, trapped. That is, until Nanase appears with a gun, after escaping and killing the police who were guarding her.
My thoughts: Well…okay….I guess that makes about as much sense as anything else in this series so far. It all seems very contrived and all, and frankly leaves me more pissed off at the show than anything else. I’m still not sure what all this is really leading towards, some big finale showdown between Yakumo and Nanase. One episode to go and color me unimpressed; if the show had ended after the ninth episode I would have been satisfied, but this final story arc has more of an air of “forced sequel” staleness around it.

My Verdict: – Waaaaahhhh.

Up next: Shinryaku: Ika Musume (finale), Kuragehime (finale), Arakawa Under the Bridge x Bridge, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (finale)
