One Piece: Strong World Episode 0
What this is about: I made the promise that I would review every new subtitled anime show (excluding blatant yaoi and/or porn) released during the Spring, Summer and Fall 2010 seasons, so now I am going back to review a handful of shows that I missed over the past few months for one reason or another. This time around, it’s Strong World Episode 0, a limited edition (3000 copies) DVD that was produced for contest winners, shipped in April, 2010, as a prequel to the tenth One Piece movie of the same name.
tl;dr review: One Piece world going back twenty years; dozens and dozens of characters, oh my!

Episode Summary: Twenty years before the main One Piece story with Luffy, during the days of the Great Age of Pirates, Gold Roger and Gold Shiki battle it out on the high seas. With a steering wheel imbedded in his head and imprisoned in the unbreakable Impel Downs, Shiki manages to escape by cutting off his feet and attacking swords as prostheses, and sets forth his grand plan, estimating it will take twenty years to implement.
My Thoughts: I’m not a One Piece fan. I’ve watched maybe the first dozen episodes of the series about a decade ago, and that’s really about it. Since then, there have been literally *hundreds* of episodes, multiple stories and dozens (if not hundreds) of characters. And it seems they felt compelled to take a moment to explain what EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM was doing twenty years ago. Given that this is nothing more than a 20-minute special, most of which is taken up with Shiki being built up as some dastardly villain, that leaves a whole bunch of quick-cut scenes mere seconds in length going all over the world to spotlight all sorts of characters.
I think I recognized maybe three or four characters, and had absolutely no idea what was going on the entire time I was watching. Although if I was a big-time One Piece fan and had been following the main storyline lo these many years I’d be pissing my pants in glee to see what the One Piece world was like twenty years ago.
The verdict: – Purely fodder for the hardcore fanbase. Then again, as a limited-edition special DVD, that’s exactly what this was designed to be for anyways.
