Anime Summary Review: Shinryaku! Ika Musume Episodes 7, 8, and 9

Rather than the longer reviews with all sorts of pictures and such, this is just a quick summary review. For a series that I’ve already been watching for several episodes, there’s not much of a reason to go into much detail. At this point in the series, you’re either still watching it (so you already know what’s going on and a long detailed run-down of everything is not really needed), or don’t care. So, without further ado:

Shinryaku! Ika Musume Episode 7 – Nagisa remains wary of Ika Musume, and decides to sleep over at the Aizawa residence to watch over her. At Eiko’s urging, Nagisa pretends not to be afraid, which freaks Ika Musume out. Later, Ika Musume agrees to go along with Cindy to her research laboratory, where she meets with her three idiotic assistants. Ika Musume also trades places with the cute daughter of the Southern Winds restaurant for a day, where she turns out to be a popular entertainer.
My thoughts: Remember the Moron Trio (yes, that was their actual nickname) from Kaichou wa Maid-sama? Well, this show has its own moron trio, and like the previous idiots I have taken an instant and intense dislike towards them. Sure, I can understand the comedic potential of the “genius idiots”, but they just simply rub me the wrong way. Also, the continuing push-and-shove between Ika Musume and Nagisa is just too cute, and when it’s turned on its ear Ika is completely lost. Equally amusing to see that Ika Musume is good at just about *everything* (she’s a natural drummer!) *except* what she wants most: Invading.

Shinryaku! Ika Musume Episode 8 – Ika Musume is sick, and they soon decide it must be a shrimp-related illness, forcing Ika Musume to lay off the shellfish for a while, which proves nearly impossible. Later, Ika Musume tries to figure out what the fins on her hat are really for, and discover she can wiggle them at will. She also builds the greatest sandcastle in history — at least, that’s what SHE thinks, everyone else thinks it looks like a giant turd. Then Ika Musume goes shopping with Eiko and learns that the umbrella is TEH GREATEST INVENTION EVARRRR!
My thoughts: It’s when Ika Musume explores the most simple and mundane of human objects for the first time that this show is at its best. This time, it is her fascination with a simple umbrella, which captivates her to no end, almost like a little child caught up her own imaginary world. Unbelievably cute! On the other end of the scale is the decidedly un-cute shrimp (yes, shrimp!) cosplay of Sanae. Although if anyone is brave enough to wear that shrimp cosplay at an anime convention, I’ll give them sixty billion double dollars as a reward.

Shinryaku! Ika Musume Episode 9 – While trying out doorbell ditching and failing horribly, Ika Musume ends up making friends with a young neighborhood girl. Later, Ika Musume tries out make-up for the first time, with predictably outrageous results. Then Sanae and Cindy fight over Ika Musume, and the Moron Trio bring over a disintegrator gun that completely destroys the Lemon Cafe.
My thoughts: Just how old is Ika Musume, anyways? I mean, at times she acts about as mature as a six-year-old kid, such as when she is playing around with lipstick and make-up (and permanent markers) for the first time. Then there’s how she awkwardly ends up making friends after completely futzing up her doorbell prank, and her building obsession at being punished for her imaginary sins. You know what, as I am wrapping up the Fall 2010 season, Shinryaku! Ika Musume manages to get an honest-to-god belly laugh out of me each time, and I am beginning to think this may end up being my favorite show of the season.

The Verdict: – Thumbs up, my good man.
