Anime Summary Review: Legend of Legendary Heroes Episodes 19, 20, and 21

Rather than the longer reviews with all sorts of pictures and such, this is just a quick summary review. For a series that I’ve already been watching for several episodes, there’s not much of a reason to go into much detail. At this point in the series, you’re either still watching it (so you already know what’s going on and a long detailed run-down of everything is not really needed), or don’t care. So, without further ado:

Legend of Legendary Heroes Episode 19 – Disillusioned with Sion, Ryner follows the monstrous Tiir back to his hidey-hole, where he is gathering others with magical eyes (including several orphaned kids) away from the less-than-noble intentions of others. Speaking of which, we get a glimpse of King Refal’s power-grab at the expense of those with the cursed eyes, even as he puts the mack on with Kiefer.
My thoughts: After what seemed like a big build-up over the past few episodes as we enter the third act of the series, this episode is…well, more build-up. Lots of explanations, lots of flashbacks, lots of exposition. As for things actually happening…not so much. Also, Refal who was acting all valiant and noble earlier may not be such a nice guy. You better watch your ass, Kiefer.

Legend of Legendary Heroes Episode 20 – Luke tracks down Ryner at Tiir’s hidey-hole and challenges him; Ferris arrives and joins the fray just in time to try to fend off a powerful Gastark baddie sent to kill off everyone. The hiding place is busted, Tiir is severely wounded, people die, Ferris and Ryner finally make amends and head back to Roland.
My thoughts: And in this episode…something actually happens! The whole thing was pretty much one big melee that served to clearly paint Gastark as the enemy (as if that wasn’t clear by now) and for the “monster” Ryner to make up with “human” Ferris.

Legend of Legendary Heroes Episode 21 – Ryner and Ferris return to Roland to find Sion wading through piles of paperwork; and unlike before there seems to be a definite unease in the air between them as their relationship has irrevocably changed. Also the fact that Sion seems to be losing his marbles doesn’t help, either. Milk recovers to find her family assassinated as Roland undergoes an ominous purge. And WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY JUST KILL OFF RYNER?
My thoughts: Wow, this episode was just plain difficult to watch, you could feel the tension building very slowly and steadily like a guitar string being tightened to the breaking point. For once, they managed to make Milk seem like a normal person (although I still don’t know why she even exists in this series). And Refal is a total asshat for torturing Kiefer. Only three more episodes left, and looks like it’s about to get VERY messy and VERY bloody before this ride is over. And I have no idea where to go from here since the main character has now been STABBED THROUGH THE HEART fer chrissakes.

The Verdict: – Still just as uneven as always, but with more plusses than minuses.
