Anime Review:
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt Episodes 2 and 3

What this is about: I have reviewed the first episode of every subtitled anime show of the Fall 2010 season. For the shows that received an initial ‘thumbs up’, I am going back and looking at the second and third episodes — which ones will survive to the next round?

Series Premise: On the borderline between Heaven and Hell is Daten City, infested with Ghosts that feed on human faults and fears. Protecting the hapless citizens are two fallen angels: the sex-crazed skank Panty and the sweet-toothed goth Stocking. Under the watchful eye of Reverend Garterbelt, these two sisters use their special skills (and transforming undergarments) to dispatch the Ghosts, receiving Heaven Coins to earn their way back into Heaven.

ep.2 tl;dr review: The duo infiltrate the high school to confront the Queen Bee; Panty’s sex tape threatens her big screen debut.

Episode 2 Summary: In the first half, Panty and Stocking are sent on an undercover mission to the high school to find out why so many kids are skipping class. They immediately run afoul of Barby, the head cheerleader and alpha-female of the campus. When Panty and Stocking’s exploits draw attention away from Barby, she becomes insanely jealous. With the help of the ghost-buster geek Brief, they track down the source of all the problems…and it turns out to be Queen Bee Barby, who is a Ghost gathering together her hive. They dispatch Barby, and everything returns to “normal”.

In the second half, Panty and Stocking about to make their big-screen debut with “Sex and the Daten City”, when Panty angrily blurts out this is actually her second acting credit, and proudly displays her first film…which is actually a seedy porno flick. She is completely oblivious to how this will affect her reputation, until her entire entourage abandons her. With the help of Stocking, the two of them go on a quest to track down and destroy every copy of the porn video…except one they save as a memento. When they roll out the red carpet, the self-centered Panty totally brushes off Stocking, who heads backstage to upload the porno video to the internet in revenge.

ep.3 tl;dr review: Dueling sisters get in a cat-fight before realizing they are better off as a team; Sperm ghosts declare war against tissue paper.

Episode 3 Summary: In the first half, Panty crosses the line when she eats Stocking’s prized pudding, causing the warring sisters to go their separate ways. While Panty listlessly hangs around with Brief, Stocking heads out to take on the Ghosts all by herself. Following an innocent-looking Little Red Riding Hood into an alley, Stocking is blindsided by her partner, Wolf. Panty rides to the rescue, but the two are still more at war with each other than the Ghost, who uses that to its advantage and pummels Panty and Stocking. Declaring a truce, the two of them team up and easily defeat Riding Hood and the Wolf, and the two of them realize that they are better off together, despite their differences.

In the second half, Sperm army men are once again launching an invasion, only to be wiped out…once again…by their dreaded enemy: Tissue paper. In revenge, the Sperm Ghosts attack and freeze the local tissue paper factory, leaving a blue-balled Garterbelt in a pent-up predicament. Panty and Stocking must defeat the multitude of sperm ghosts to make the city safe once again to use tissue paper.

My Thoughts: This is certainly the most…eye-raising show of the season, to be sure. It’s about as shocking as a grenade upside the head. Even knowing in advance that the whole show is designed to be controversial and offensive, it still manages to be pretty overwhelming. I mean, the whole sticky ghost sperm gambit was out there. My general reaction, condensed down to about three seconds.

Well, perhaps the second and third episodes were not as much of a hilarious shock to the system as the first episode, because I was prepared to be outraged. But it was really quite an experience. Also a visual treat with inventively stylized graphics and designs, totally unlike anything seen in Japanese anime in, well…forever. I don’t think there has been anything quite like this since Ren and Stimpy redefined American animation twenty years ago. Okay, okay, perhaps I’m overstating things just a wee bit. But it is very refreshing to see something so totally different *and* entertaining *and* funny, a total departure in just about every way from the standard fare. Yeah, most of it is pretty base and disgusting humor, but they do it so well!. I’m sold!

Oh, and by the way, thanks for creeping me out, Garterbelt — did you really need to join the Super Adventure Club with your unnatural fascination with Brief? ewwwwwww.

The Verdict: – Heavenly.
