Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector Episode 1

Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about. — Watching all the anime shows so you don’t HAVE to!

tl;dr review: They fight, and fight, and fight and fight and fight, fight-fight-fight, fight-fight-fight; Oh, and just a taste of inappropriate fan-service, too.

The Skinny: People piloting giant mechanical robots are fighting against each other in the future. They fight, and then they fight some more, then they try to explain why they are fighting, then they fight some more. It’s not really clearly explained is exactly who the characters are, who is battling against each other, or even why, but that’s not the point — it’s all about Super Robots, and Wars! At the end, for no definable reason, there are several female characters in skimpy bathing suits, which has nothing to do with the show itself.

My Thoughts: Bwuh? What the frak did I just watch? Apparently Super Robot Wars has been going on for a long time as a game franchise with various other media tie-ins, but I’ve never heard about it, and know nothing it at all. Quite clearly, this show is NOT aimed at the uninitiated like myself.

There’s a whole lot of story that has gone on before, and this first episode just drops right into the middle of all of it, as if it was “just another episode”. I really have no clue what is really going on, other than there are groups of robots fighting against each other. And frankly, this intro to Super Robot Wars did not give me *any* incentive to go back and figure it all out. What a mess! Only watch this show if you are intimately familiar with the franchise and are already a hardcore fan, otherwise you’ll be left as confused and worn out as I was.

(FYI, this series was one of the original shows that debuted as part of the Fall season in early October, but for some reason I totally missed it the first pass around. Probably wished I could have missed it completely, since it is in running for the “Worst of Season” award.)
