Anime Review in a Minute:
Hidamari Sketch x Hoshimittsu Special Episode 1
Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about. — Watching all the anime shows so you don’t HAVE to!
tl;dr review: Girls at art school visit new restaurant, eat food, leave; New girl in school goes all ‘Fatal Attraction’ on another girl.
The Skinny: This is a special original video animation for the third season in the long-running Hidamari Sketch series, featuring the daily lives of various girls at an art-oriented high school. In the first story, a new restaurant has opened in town, and they all decide to check it out after class. They order food, they eat food, they drink stuff, and leave. In the second story, a new girl arrives at the school, and because it is so far away she doesn’t know anyone. As she is completely freaking out over essentially nothing (where to put her shoes), another helpful student lends her a hand. Over the next week, the new girl obsesses over her, but doesn’t get a chance to say hello properly for several days. When she does finally manage to meet her, she’s talking to another student, causing her to get irrationally jealous. Theeeeeeeeee end.

My Thoughts: OOPS!!! By mistake I wrote up a quick review and posted it here a few days ago, and promptly deleted it completely — so this is just a second quick replacement review. Double-feh.
Anyway, Hidamari Sketch is a fairly popular manga and anime series, yet another of the many, many, many shows to come out over the past few years that I know absolutely nothing about. So, watching this OVA is an opportunity to familiarize myself with the series, and decide whether it piques my interest to check out the earlier stuff. And my answer to that question? A pretty resounding “Nope!”. This show was boring as all-hell. Is it supposed to be funny or something? Perhaps it is supposed to be cute or touching? I dunno, the most interesting reaction it got out of me was a stifled yawn.
Is it just this special episode that is brain-numbingly insipid, or is the entire series this dull? Cripes, it manages to make K-On seem drama-filled and action-packed, seriously!
On top of that, I also found the propensity for the characters to slip into their flat-headed super-deformed ugly-mode at a moment’s notice rather disturbing. Whoever thought up that character design needs to have their fingers broken. Oh, excuse, broken *more* than they already are.

The Verdict: — If you couldn’t tell…no, I did not like it.
