Anime Review in a Minute:
Robin with his 100 Friends Episode 1
Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about. — Watching all the anime shows so you don’t HAVE to!
tl;dr review: Robin discovers it’s better to have fun with friends than to be alone; Moves to new town, vows to make 100 new friends.
The Skinny: Robin is a little boy that would rather sit alone tinkering with his toy robot than play outside. When a stray soccer ball bounces by, a classmate invites him to play with everyone else; Robin says he’ll join them when he finishes working on his robot head. Days pass, and he completes his task, then Robin heads outside to play a game of hide-and-seek. He discovers that it is more fun to play with friends than to play alone. But Robin then learns he’s moving to Green Village. Sad, Robin is encouraged by his friend on how to make new friends at his new school. Robin is eager to make friends at his new place, but when their family arrives at Green Village, they are barred from entering with their “illegal” fossil-fuel car, oh noes!

My Thoughts: I might have well just wandered in to early morning PBS or Nick Jr. The only reason this can be called ‘anime’ is because it was produced in Japan. This could just as easily have been dubbed in French or English or Russian and you’d be none the wiser. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course; an animated show is no less better or worse based on national origin.
Produced by American/Japanese designer Max Weintraub, this short (6-minute) show is aimed at the pre-school set, with themes of friendship and sharing and environmentalism. There’s also a Vince Guaraldi-esque background music track. It’s all fairly simplistic and childish and easy to digest — perfectly fine, naturally, but I seriously doubt anyone over the age of six would find this show interesting in the slightest.
