Anime Review:
Agriculture Angel Baraki Episode 1

What this is about: I made the promise that I would review every new subtitled anime show (excluding blatant yaoi and/or porn) released during the Spring and Summer 2010 seasons, so now I am going back to review a handful of shows that I missed over the past few months for one reason or another. This time around, it’s Agriculture Angel Baraki (a.k.a. ‘Agukaru’), a 12-minute web-based educational video that debuted on September 17th.

tl;dr review: Sanae Baraki teaches about farming; transforms into magical girl to defeat attacking robot.

Episode 1 Summary: Sanae Baraki is a young girl who lives on a farm in rural Japan, happily working the rice fields. Taking a break for lunch, she helps to explain with the help of an animated rice grain how rice is planted and harvested to the viewers. Three hungry animals (a mole, a tanuki and a boar) plot on how they can destroy the crops to re-take their land, and send in a giant robot to suck up the water and dry out the seedlings. Transforming into the Agricultural Angel withe help of the rice grain spirit, she defeats the robots and drives off the animals.

My Thoughts: It’s an educational video, with some magical girl stuff thrown in to keep the kiddos interested. The first half of the video is all classroom stuff, showing how rice is planted and the first stages of the growing process. In the second half…comes conflict! There’s the scheming tanuki, the silent boar, and…wait, is that Morocco Mole?? With the floating rice-grain spirit she has her own transformation sequence and becomes the Agriculture Angel who attacks with…a stick with rice grains on the end of it? Oh, it doesn’t matter, she wins anyway, and the world’s food supplies are saved!

It’s all wacky and harmless and cute stuff, nothing awful but nothing special, either. But honestly, I cannot imagine this show would of any interest at all to anyone who is not an elementary school child that has a desire to learn about farming.

The Verdict:
