Anime Review in a Minute:
Iron Man Episode 1
Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about. — Watching all the anime shows so you don’t HAVE to!
tl;dr review: Tony Stark sets his sights on Japan for his latest project; Western hubris meets Eastern humility in inevitable clash of cultures.
The Skinny: As Tony Stark mulls over his impending retirement from the metal suit, he flies off to Japan to start his latest venture: Providing limitless free energy to the world. As he begins the construction of his massive arc station, he is also overseeing the final touches on his Dio Suits, intended to replace the need for Iron Man. With his massively oversized ego, Stark’s bravado clashes with Japanese sensibilities. When one of Dio suit pilots is brainwashed, Stark must don his suit one more time to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, but is sidetracked by a giant scorpion robot and the Dio suit is absconded.
My Thoughts: In a nutshell, I hated it.
Oh…you want more? Well, with my innate dislike of American superheroes, I was already predisposed against this show. My knowledge of Iron Man is based entirely on the two blockbuster movies (which were quite decent, I must say), and comparing this show to the Hollywood movies is inevitable. And anime-Tony Stark is no match for Downey-Tony Stark.
It’s a train-wreck from the get-go. The writing is awful, the character designs are absolutely atrocious, the animation is lacking and stiff, the acting is sub-par, the pacing is choppy, the sound design is minimal, storyboards uninspiring, CGI sequences strangely awkward. It almost seems to me that everyone working on this show decided halfway through that it was going to be terrible anyway, so they just half-assed it to the end so that they could crap out *something* and get it out of the way. I half expected to see a “Directed by John Smithee” byline. There’s nothing redeeming about this show in any way.
If I was Marvel, I would be completely ashamed to have my name attached to this. If this is an example of what we might expect from Marvel anime adaptations in the future, they might as well turn off the lights and go home. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

The Verdict: – The worst show of the year? Nah, but it comes close to the bottom of the barrel.
