Ookami-san Episode 3
Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about – I watch the shows so you don’t HAVE to!
About the Series: Ookami Ryouko is the member of the ‘Otogi Bank’, an organization at the Otogi Academy that helps other students with special favors or requests in exchange for requesting favors from them. Along with her best-friend Ringo (always dressed like Little Red Riding Hood), she is joined by Ryoushi (who has a paralyzing fear of being looked at and a professed crush on Ookami) and the rest of her friends in the Otogi Bank. Together, they try to solve the problems of their classmates, always seeming to get into trouble themselves along the way.
ep.3 tl;dr review: Otohime vs. Mimi in a grudge match for Miss Otogi Academy Contest; It’s a race to the bottom!
In this episode: When she was younger, Otohime was a slow, dim-witted, chubby girl that everyone picked on…except for Tarou. But she’s been drinking milk (it does a body good!), and she’s all grown up now, permanently attached to Tarou’s side. But competition arrives in the form of little loli Mimi, one of Otohime’s tormentors who teased her with the name of “Turtle”. They decide the settle the score by entering the Miss Otogi Academy competition, and Otohime vows to win first place for Tarou’s sake. The president of the Otogi Bank devises a strategy for Otohime, but while it seems to increase her recognition, both of the contestant’s reputations are dragged through the mud. The final day of the contest arrives, culminating in a swimsuit show, and the sparks are still flying. When the results are revealed…it turns out neither of them placed in the top ten. Otohime is crushed, until she learns the one person who did cast their ballot for her was Tarou.
My Thoughts: It’s the Ookami-san version of the Tortoise vs. the Hare, all wrapped up in a little morality play where Otohime loses sight of her true objective and is reminded what is truly important to her. In this episode the main characters were almost entirely sidelined, instead this focused on fleshing out the background of the two supporting characters of Tarou and Otohime, plus some rather disturbing cross-dressing bits with the President. To be honest, it’s a bit of a crap episode, somewhat annoyed with the breakdown of the fourth wall with comments by Ringo about “character overlap” and all, and the whole swimsuit bit was just pure stupid fanservice. And, of course, HATE HATE HATE the smarmy narrator comments, which have an annoying tendency to overlap the character’s speaking itself. The narrator could be completely excised from the show without it hurting the story one whit, and I wish I had that option.
Plus, the very *concept* of a “Miss Otogi Academy” competition, where the entire male student body votes on their favorite female student and the highlight of it all is a skimpy swimsuit show, well, that’s just all kinds of wrong. Yeah, I know this isn’t supposed to be taken seriously, after all the show has somewhat of a fantasy-world feel to it…but still, the objectification aspect is enough to earn a Reddit Look of Disapproval.
Not liking this episode, hope this isn’t representative of the rest of the series.
The character I’m starting to like the most is, surprise, Ringo. I know that the show is centered around Ryouko and all, but the whole “tsundere” thing, to be honest, is really worn out. Ringo (aka Little Miss Riding Hood) doesn’t have a single ounce of sex appeal in the slightest (she’s built like a nine year old girl, after all – and if you’re attracted to that, then might I suggest chemical castration may be in your future), but it seems like she’s the most level-headed and intelligent one in the whole group. Cute as a button, too. (As for why buttons are considered cute, that’s beyond me…)

The Verdict: – Calm down Takako, it’s just a few swimsuits…
