Anime Review in a Minute:
Kaichu Episodes 1 and 2

Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about. — Watching all the anime shows so you don’t HAVE to!

tl;dr review: Showdown on the archery court; Look out, it’s a trap!

The Skinny: Tachikawa is a member of the high school archery club, a follower of his grandfather’s outdated style of archery. A new student transfers into the school, who just happens to be a boy trapped in a girl’s body, and proud of it! Despite everyone making fun of him/her, Gon wants to join the archery club as well. Tachikawa explains to Gon that he wants to get better, so that he can one day complete against Fudou, Son of God, the best archer in the world. The next day Tachikawa discovers his beloved bow is broken, and punches out the team captain after being humiliated by him. Gon then challenges the team captain in a duel: if he/she wins, Tachikawa will be let back on the team. During the competition, it is revealed that Gon is actually Fudou in disguise. Gon wins, Tachikawa is impressed and amazed, and Gon has seemingly fallen for Tachikawa, which creeps him out.

My Thoughts: I reviewed two episodes, because this show is just two episodes long, *and* each one just four minutes long at that. Is it primarily an archery story, or it is primarily a tranny story? Either way, IT’S A TRAP! I’m not a fan of cross-dressing or gender-bending stories (they kinda freak me out) – and there’s no shortage of ‘Traps’ in anime (part of the reason why I could never get into one of the most popular manga of all time, Ranma 1/2).

Well, putting that aside, I can understand the humor potential of mixing up gender roles, even if I don’t appreciate it myself. What about the rest of the story? Well, there’s simply not much *there*. Less than eight minutes of story. It’s an appetizer, and just a small one at that. What little I saw was not awful, but not noteworthy either — just a story fragment. If there was more, or rather, a potential for more episodes, I might be able to make a true thumbs-up or thumbs-down decision. But with just two four-minute shorts…there’s no point in bothering with this. Not worth the effort.

And, whatever you do…Don’t Touch It! It’s EEEEEVIL!

The Verdict:

The tally for Summer 2010 season first episodes so far:
Passing Grade: Ookami-san, Highschool of the Dead, Mitsudomoe, The Occult Academy, Black Butler II, Kurenai OVA, Nurarihyon no Mago, Shiki, Legend of Legendary Heroes, Cat Shit One
Failing grade: Amagami SS, Sekirei: Pure Engagement, Seitokai Yakuindomo, Strike Witches 2, Shukufuku no Campanella, Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail, Digimon Xros Wars, Black Rock Shooter OVA, Asobi ni Iku Yo, Sengoku Basara Two, Tono to Issho, Zettai Karen Children OVA, Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu, Kaichu

Up Next (not necessarily in this order): Break Blade, Bungaku Shoujo Memoire, and then that’s pretty much it for the Summer Season!
