Anime Review in a Minute:
Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu OVA

Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about. — Watching all the anime shows so you don’t HAVE to!

tl;dr review: Confessions at the planetarium; Clumsy tale of girly-teen love.

The Skinny: Tsubaki was just your normal, everyday, awkward teenage girl…until a boy with the same name as her enters her class! She takes an immediate dislike towards him, and sparks fly. In a particularly intense moment, she chops off a chunk of his long hair, and he vows to make her pay back for her insolence by stealing all of her “first experiences”. That’s the setting for the series based on the manga; the original video animation one-shot picks up at a point where Tsubaki is giving him a present of a planetarium show while dressed in a polar bear outfit. Uncomfortable words are exchanged, and he ends up half-confessing his feelings towards her. The next day, the clumsy new relationship is still not well defined, and they have another heartfelt conversation in the library.

My Thoughts: I distinctly remember reading the outline of the manga series a few years back, but never read any of the long-running series. Apparently this OVA special picks up waaaaaay into the middle of the story — there’s about a two-minute introduction and then it jumps right into the whole planetarium thing without one peep of explanation. Huh? It’s like you decide to watch an anime series by starting with episode 17 of a 26-episode series.

To be clear, this special was created *specifically* for people who are already fans of the series and know exactly what is going on — people like me jumping into the deep end of the pool head-first will be left just as rudderless as me. It’s all touchy-feely relationship stuff between high school students who hate each other and over time come to fall for one another, so there’s nothing new there. And as far shoujo romance shows go, my interest in that sort of thing ranks about a two or three on a ten-point scale, so I’m not exactly predisposed to like it in the first place. Oh, and I’m sure there’s an explanation for the whole panda-bear-suit thingy, but without any context it’s pretty damn creepy and weird.

Only watch this if you are *well* versed in the manga already. This is *not* a starting point to get interested in the series.
