Sengoku Basara Two Episode 1

Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about.

tl;dr review: Epic battles in Epic Japan between Epic Warriors, huzzah!; Sauron arrives to put the smack-down on everyone, boo!

The Skinny: The show opens with a massive battle scene, two large armies face off against each other in the Japanese countryside — no explanation why. Their leaders get into long, extended one-on-one fights for control, and they fight and fight and fight and fight and fight. Oh, and then they fight some more. But their internecine squabbles are all for naught as a Big Baddy arrives on the scene — he’s about the size of the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man, apparently invincible and announces his intention to rule them all, nya-ha-ha! All the brave little warriors see the writing on the wall and flee to fight another day. Can they set aside their differences to face this new terrible threat?

My Thoughts: So, you want yourself some anime that is all about the fighting? Well, here you go! It’s like a video game in anime form….which is exactly what it is. But to me, it’s all so ridiculous. You have incredibly idiotic warriors, all wearing incredibly idiotic costumes, battling each other with incredibly idiotic fighting powers with specially-powered attacks. Oh…wait…I just inadvertently described American superhero comics. Well, the comparison is valid, since 98% of all American superhero comics are equally as banal, worthless pieces of pulp that make my brain ache. Well, whether it’s Japanese warriors flipping out like ninjas with Real Ultimate Power, or American superhero pablum, it’s still crap-on-toast. I’m hard-pressed to say anything positive about this show. Well, the backgrounds are nice, I suppose…

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have another nominee for the Wildcardz Memorial Prize for the Worst Anime of the Season. Now, finish him!

Sauron is not amused. Anyone got a fly-swatter?
