Nurarihyon no Mago Episode 1

Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about.

tl;dr review: Quarter-demon heir just wants to be a normal boy; Keeping the supernatural world from his friends is harder than it seems.

The Skinny: Rikuo is one-quarter demon and fated to become the successor of his grandfather, head of the powerful Nura demon clan. But Rikuo just wants to be a normal human boy, attending junior high school with all of his friends. But when they decide they want to go on a ghost hunt in the old, abandoned campus building, Rikuo has has his hands full. Even though he sternly warned the multitudes of demons in his household to avoid that building, he ends up having to shoo away minor demons (not from his clan) left and right, doing his best to convince his friends that ghosts and demons do not exist. But when a powerful spirit attacks him and his unconscious sweetie Kana, two of his most trusted clan members, Yuki and Aotobou, come to their rescue in the nick of time. Turns out they have been protecting him while in human disguise for a while without Rikuo knowing about it. In the end Rikuo returns to his mansion with Kana, his secret still intact.

My Thoughts: Is it just me, or does anyone else get a strong Bleach vibe from this show? That cannot be a good thing — while Bleach started out okay, within less than a dozen episodes it had become unwatchable and uninteresting. This show is also aimed at the twelve-year-old boy slice of viewership, so for me it feels kinda simplistic and inoffensive. The whole premise of the show is a bit shopworn, and I suspect it may end up being just all too juvenile for me. First episode was decent, though; we’ll see how it goes. There may be enough light comedy potential to keep it watchable.

So…where’s Waldo-sama?
