Anime Review in a Minute:
Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail Episode 1
Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about.
tl;dr review: Heavily-armored maid Roberta goes rogue in mission for revenge; Lagoon Company is entreated to track her down.
The Skinny: The CIA carries out an assassination of the head of the Lovelace family in Venezuela, leaving his young son, Garcia, questioning why. Their maid, a former terrorist named Roberta, vows revenge for her master’s death. The trail leads to the rough-and-tumble southeast Asian city of Roanapur, where the Lagoon Company has set up shop. Getting a tip about a stranger (in a maid outfit) about town, Revy and Rock of the Lagoon Company head down to the Yellowflag Bar for intel from a group of Colombians. While talking, a young girl wearing a maid uniform happens to saunter in — but not the maid they expected to see, and the Colombians make the mistake of picking a fight with her. An all-out brawl ensues, the bar is destroyed, the Colombians flee, and the young warrior-maid (Fabiola) leads them to meet with Garcia. Once there, Garcia asks them (specifically Rock) to help find the bloodthirsty Roberta for him.
My Thoughts: This is actually the third in a series of Black Lagoon anime shows, based on a multi-million-selling manga series. The Lagoon Company are four mercenaries, hired to smuggle goods and carry out illicit missions from their base in Roanapur. The character of Roberta is also apparently returning as a fan-favorite, the crazy killer in a maid uniform that gives all the fetish-loving fanboys many hours of one-fisted entertainment. But as for me, well, not so much; a cute girl in a maid uniform suddenly whipping out huge guns, swirling around killing a couple dozen people in a torrent of bullets, emerging without a scratch, that’s just too over-the-top. It’s something straight out of a Quentin Tarantino movie. I hate Quentin Tarantino. Choreographed stylized violence is always a poor substitute for actual story and plot. A shame — seems like there could be a story hidden under that thick haze of unnecessary violence. I think I’ll give this a pass.
Keep on drinkin’, Revy. Maybe the series gets better with beer goggles on.
