Sekirei: Pure Engagement Episode 1

Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about.

tl;dr review: The battle continues to find out who will be the supreme ‘Sekirei’; But really, it’s just an excuse to show lots of big-breasted women fighting.

The Skinny: A sequel to the original Sekirei series, where 108 aliens (who look just like well-endowed women) with special powers arrive from the sky and battle it out in a grand “Game” to see who is the top Sekirei. These Sekirei are paired with ‘Ashikabi’, who are special humans that help bring out their powers. Minato is a hapless college dropout student, who also ends up the Ashikabi of several different Sekirei, and at the beginning of this show he is living with them anime-harem-style, a cause of unending anguish as well as amusement. Following the climax of the previous battles, it seems that things have calmed down a bit, but it may just be the calm before the storm, and a promise of future battles looms.

My Thoughts: Like nearly every other anime I sample, I went into this show completely blind to the previous series and the manga that preceded it, so I really had no fucking clue what was going on for the entire episode. The synopsis above is mostly cobbled together from reading descriptions of the series from other sources — this is not really a show you can jump into the middle and start from there. So, does watching this episode make me want to go back and watch the original Sekirei series before moving forward. Um, no. This show is awful – truly awful.

To be honest, the plot doesn’t matter in the slightest. This show is really just an excuse to have lots of buxom women in skin-tight (or non-existent) outfits fighting each other, with an Average Joe stuck in the middle that the masturbatory fanboys can all pretend is themselves. Lots of fanservice, lots of big boobs drawn with protractors, some nudity, some loli, lots of sophomoric sexual humor. If you’re going to watch this show, it’s not going to be for the ‘gripping story’ or the ‘compelling plot’. Well, people who watch Sekirei will most likely be ‘gripping’ something and ‘compelling’ something, I suspect.

The Verdict: – This is exactly the type of anime that gives anime a bad name in the eyes of the unwashed public. Unfortunately, it’s also exactly the type of anime that the most hardcore of the sex-starved otakus lap up.

Up Next (not necessarily in this order): Shukufuku no Campanella, Seitokai Yakuindomo, Strike Witches 2, Legend of Legendary Heroes, Mitsudomoe, Kuroshitsuji 2, Digimon Xros Wars, Occult Academy, Nurarihyon no Mago, Kurenai, Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail, Sengoku Basara II, Asobi ni Iku yo, Shiki
