Amagami SS Episode 1

Anime Review in a Minute: What this is all about.

tl;dr review: Junichi, still stinging from a rejection two years ago, sets his sights on the popular Morishima; Oh, Morishima, you’re such a tease!

The Skinny: Based on a popular romance videogame, Amagami SS follows the love exploits of Junichi Tachibana. Two years before, he had been abandoned on a date over Christmas, which has left him romantically paralyzed ever since. This year, he vows to change as he sets his sights on one of the most popular girls in his school, Haruka Morishima. She seems to take a liking to him after she observes Junichi helping a freshman, as they repeatedly run into each other. Finally, he gets up the courage to confess to her, but she turns him down cold, leaving him to slink back home to hide in his closet. Yet, there are several other girls at school waiting in the wings, who appear to have taken an interest in him…

My Thoughts: So…this is what a dating sim video game is like. Can’t say that I’ve ever played one, but you could practically see the game plotline unfolding, the scenarios playing out, the decision points coming one after the other. There are six girls in the game, and apparently Junichi gets a shot at each one, with a different ending for each scenario. All the main characters are introduced, but this episode focuses on the unobtainable Morishima, who turns out to be a real flirtatious tease.

I am trying to be more lenient and reject fewer shows out of the gate, but good god this show is boring as hell. You know the show’s in trouble when you’re repeatedly checking out that progress bar to see when it’s going to end…especially when you start checking a quarter of the way through. I don’t think I could stay awake for another episode.

I will say one good thing about the show, though: It is *very* well drawn. Nice character designs and some really luscious backgrounds. Wish they could have used some of that talent and money on the script, though.

Hrm how weird, I came to this post via your RSS feed, yet it’s not near the front page. It looks like you’re transferring all your posts over from livejournal to here eh? I guess that’s one of the caveats of coming over from there to wordpress.

Anyways, on the topic of Amagami SS. I can almost completely agree with you on how it gets boring (especially in that first episode), but strangely enough I ended up enjoying this series.

Maybe it was because of the community that followed this series, but whenever I checked forums, you could see a lot of people having fun talking about it. This is generally a goofy fun anime series, but I guess it’s the community that made the experience truly memorable,
