Anime Review: Toriko Special

Anime Review in a Minute:

tl;dr review: WHAT IS THIS; I DON’T EVEN…

The Skinny: Toriko is a Gourmet Hunter, traveling the world to acquire rare ingredients to create the ultimate meal. Teaming up with the timid Komatsu, he travels to the mysterious Baron Archipelago to capture the rare Galala Crocodile. When they arrive, they discover that the Crocodile has grown to gargantuan proportions and has become lord of the island. However, it is no match for Toriko’s “fork and knife” fighting technique, and the monster is defeated and consumed.

My Thoughts: My god, it’s Chef of the North Star! This is just outright insane, and without having any previous knowledge about the show (watching it cold) I was just left thinking “what the fuck did I just watch?” Apparently it’s a popular manga series, and waaaaay over the top. Toriko looks and acts like someone out of a Tetsuo Hara manga, complete with ridiculous food-based attack techniques. His companion, Komatsu, is a wimpering knock-kneed, pants-wetting weakling thrown in for comic relief. I dunno, this is all just *too* preposterous for me.

So, will this one-off episode (part of a Shonen Jump Super 2009 special) turn into an actual series? I wouldn’t put it past them – I could see this show appealing to fans of One Piece quite easily.
