Anime Review in a Minute:
Magic Kaito
(Kid the Phantom Thief)

What This Is All About: I am going to attempt to watch at least the first episode of every anime show of the new season that is subtitled. The review will be divided into three short sections: “The Elevator Speech”, a quick two-to-three sentence synopsis of the episode; “The Skinny”, my initial reactions, and “The Verdict”, a simple Pass/Fail grade that determines whether to continue to the next episode or not. For those with a passing grade, I will follow-up later with the second or third episodes for a re-evaluation.

The Elevator Speech: Kaito Kuroba is a mischievous 15-year-old who is a master at magic tricks, always to the annoyance of his lifelong friend, Aoko Nakamori. Eight years ago his father, a professional magician, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Suddenly the master-thief known as Kid Kaitou returns after an eight-year absence to steal a precious gem from under they eyes of the police chief (Aoko’s father) — but why now? By coincidence, Kaito presses on a panel at his house, which deposits him into a secret hideaway, where he learns that his father was actually Kid Kaitou. But if his father is dead, then who is this new mystery man stealing the jewels? Kaito decides to don his father’s costume, and get to the bottom of things.

The Skinny: Based on the manga series started by Gosho Aoyama, which he abruptly discontinued after his more-popular Case Closed (aka Detective Conan) took off — I was actually wondering whether I was really watching an anime version of The Pink Panther with the bumbling inspector and keystone cops chasing after the masked jewel thief. It’s a pleasant, light-hearted comedy/mystery — nothing that is going to set the world on fire but anyone who enjoys the Case Closed series should just eat this up. Alas, that does not include me. Magic Kaito is a perfectly fine show, but on a personal level it does not pique my interest and impel me to check out future episodes.

The Verdict:
