Anime Review in a Minute:
Jewel Pet Tinkle
What This Is All About: I am going to attempt to watch at least the first episode of every anime show of the new season that is subtitled. The review will be divided into three short sections: “The Elevator Speech”, a quick two-to-three sentence synopsis of the episode; “The Skinny”, my initial reactions, and “The Verdict”, a simple Pass/Fail grade that determines whether to continue to the next episode or not. For those with a passing grade, I will follow-up later with the second or third episodes for a re-evaluation.
The Elevator Speech: In the magical world of Jewelland, the cute critters known as Jewel Pets attend the School of Magic in order to learn their craft. A fuzzy little white rabbit named Ruby hops into the academy, but is unable to pass the entrance exam, so she is sent to the human world to find a girl the “right heart”. Ruby meets up with Akari Sakura, and causes trouble for her on her first day at school, where she is overshadowed by her popular sister’s reputation as well as her own lack of confidence in herself. Ruby cheers her up, and the two of them magically transport back to Jewelland, where they chant and incantation, transform, and the two of them are welcomed at the School of Magic, and everyone lives happily ever after.
The Skinny: This show was quite painful to watch, although not because of the simplistic and insipid story (after all, that is to be expected for a show aimed at very young little girls). Rather, it was an assault on the eyes with all the sparkly jewel bits, bright pinks and pastels, like a trip to Candyland or Care Bear Land while hopped up on acid. (PS No surprise this show is sponsored by Sanrio.) Excuse me while I wipe away the tears, I think I got about ten pounds of sugar poured into my eyes. The story itself is nothing special — your typical little girl magical fantasy where “you can do anything if you believe in yourself”. But frankly, I don’t think I would be willing to inflict such an eye-bleeding melange of colors on anyone’s senses, even insufferable little girls.
The Verdict: – This show earns the Kyouka Midarezaki Look of Disapproval.
