Anime Review in a Minute:
Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri

What This Is All About: I am going to attempt to watch at least the first episode of every anime show of the new season that is subtitled. The review will be divided into three short sections: “The Elevator Speech”, a quick two-to-three sentence synopsis of the episode; “The Skinny”, my initial reactions, and “The Verdict”, a simple Pass/Fail grade that determines whether to continue to the next episode or not. For those with a passing grade, I will follow-up later with the second or third episodes for a re-evaluation.

The Elevator Speech: Fairy Tale Land in is trouble! Cinderella, Snow White and Kaguya-hime have disappeared, and a scourge is slowly spreading over the land. In order to help restore Fairy Tale Land, three small sidekick-creatures are sent to the human world to find three princesses to spread happiness and send “Happy Tones” back to the land. These creatures find three kindergarten-age girls who meet by chance at a concert for an idol singer, and give the girls gems that transform them into adult idol singers, and they perform a song and dance on stage, making everyone happy. The end.

The Skinny: It’s a saccharine-sweet magical girls transformation anime aimed at six-year-old little girls…and unless you fall into that category, there’s no reason to watch this show. The story and plot are as shallow as you would imagine, and everyone is cute and chipper and everything is thoroughly cavity-inducing. The only thing really worth noting is the jarring computer generated concert performance sequence – why they chose to animate that part in that weird uncanny-valley style is a head-scratcher. Not that it really matters to the ankle-biters that this show is targeted towards, though.

The Verdict:
