Anime Review in a Minute:
SD Gundam Senshi Sangokuden
Brave Battle Warriors: Romance of the Three Kingdoms
What This Is All About: I am going to attempt to watch at least the first episode of every anime show of the new season that is subtitled. The review will be divided into three short sections: “The Elevator Speech”, a quick two-to-three sentence synopsis of the episode; “The Skinny”, my initial reactions, and “The Verdict”, a simple Pass/Fail grade that determines whether to continue to the next episode or not. For those with a passing grade, I will follow-up later with the second or third episodes for a re-evaluation.
The Elevator Speech: One of the most popular legends in ancient China is the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, dating back to the early feudal era of the third century. This story has been retold countless times in many formats (including extremely loose re-imagined versions this season in the already-reviewed Shin Koihime Mousou Otogi Tairan and Ikkitousen Xtreme Xecutor). And this time, the story is presented…in super-deformed Gundam form! The characters in the Chinese legend are replaced with cute versions of the Gundam mecha, as Liu Bei heads off to battle.
The Skinny: Huh? Wait…Why??? Is there any point to this at all? As far as I can tell, this is a fairly straightforward version of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, except the humans are replaced with tiny Gundams. If you closed your eyes, you’d never know any difference. There’s no reason whatsoever for them to be mechanical beings (Other than, I guess, to sell lots and lots of toys, ding ding ding!), and not even a whiff of cutesy humor you expect associated with “super-deformed”. I have a very healthy dislike of anything remotely Gundam (the only show even barely watchable is MS Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, everything else is pure drivel), so I’m ill disposed to like this show in the first place. But even if I *was* an avid Gundam freak, I still question the mere existence of something like this. (Then again, this isn’t really that much different than Lego Star Wars, so what do I know?)
